The AI allowance, plainly
What the allowance is — and isn't
Two things in the studio use AI: story scans and cited questions. Each costs us a small amount with the AI provider, depending on how much of your manuscript it reads. Your plan includes a monthly allowance to cover that cost, and we show it the way writers think: as approximate words of reading — about 900,000 a month on Core and about 2.4 million on Studio — rather than cents or invented credits. A story scan reads each scene once, and scenes that haven't changed since the last scan aren't read again; a question reads a few passages.
- You see the most a run can use before it starts. Every scan and question shows an estimate first, and says so plainly if one run would take a quarter or more of what's left, or push the month past 80% of its allowance. Nothing is spent until you confirm.
- If it doesn't fit, it doesn't start. Nothing is spent, and you see the date your allowance resets. You can wait, add a reading pack or change plan.
- It's a ceiling, not a meter running up a bill. When it's used up, AI features wait for next month's allowance or a reading pack. There are no overage charges. On a yearly plan, the allowance still arrives month by month.
- Everything else is unmetered. Writing, saving, the story bible, planning, stats, basic checks, beta readers, book design and exports never touch it.
- It's off until you say so. AI is switched off for each book until you allow it, and private scenes are never sent.
The word figures are approximate and cautious: they assume each run uses the most it could, so real use usually goes further. How far an allowance goes depends on the length of what's read, so we don't promise a number of questions or scans. The estimate before each one is the honest measure, and your settings show what's left this month.

Give a friend more reading
Invite a writer friend, and you both get more reading
Every account has a personal invite link in Settings. If a friend joins with it, chooses a paid plan and keeps it past the 14-day refund window, you each get about 300,000 more words of reading for the studio's AI tools. It stays available for 12 months and is used while you have a plan or trial.
- Your friend's trial is exactly the same either way, and the link shares nothing about you or your books.
- Refunded, disputed and test purchases don't count, and a friend can only ever join through one link.
- No rankings or leaderboards: Settings shows a plain count of friends who joined and rewards earned.

Is there a free plan?
Yes. Free costs nothing and doesn't end. One active book with the full writing workspace, planning, story bible and export, plus basic continuity checks that don't use AI. AI reading comes with a reading pack or a plan. It includes no monthly AI allowance and no co-authors.
What's the difference between Free and the trial?
Every new account starts with a 14-day guided trial: one book, one co-author and about 6 million words of AI reading once your email address is verified, so you can try story scans and cited questions. When the trial ends you're on Free unless you choose a plan. Free has no end date and keeps the whole writing workspace for one active book, but AI reading on Free comes only from reading packs.
Do I need a card for the trial?
No. The 14-day trial needs only an email address, and so does Free. Nothing is charged unless you choose a plan or buy a reading pack.
What's a reading pack?
Extra AI reading you buy once, with no subscription: about 420,000 words for $5, about 1.2 million for $12 or about 4.2 million for $29. A pack is used only when your monthly allowance (or trial allowance) can't cover a run, lasts 12 months and works on every plan, Free included. You need a verified email address. Packs are bought on Gumroad from Settings; checkout is filled in with your account's email, so the reading is added by itself, and if it hasn't appeared you can enter the sale ID from your receipt in Settings.
Do packs expire?
Yes, 12 months after you buy them. Because your monthly allowance is always used first, pack reading is kept for when the month's allowance runs short. Settings shows how much extra reading you have left and when the earliest of it expires. A refunded pack's unused reading is removed.
What happens when my allowance runs out?
A scan or question that doesn't fit what's left doesn't start, and nothing is sent or spent. You can wait for next month's allowance, add a reading pack, or choose a plan or a bigger one. Writing, search, the story bible, planning, basic checks and export keep working the whole time.
What happens if I stop paying?
You move to Free. One active book with the full writing workspace, planning, story bible and export, plus basic continuity checks that don't use AI. AI reading comes with a reading pack or a plan. Nothing is deleted unless you delete it, and any reading packs you've bought stay usable until they expire.
Are some features only on the bigger plan?
No. Core and Studio have every feature; they differ in how many books can be active at once, storage, co-authors per book and the size of the monthly AI allowance. Free keeps the writing workspace for one active book, without co-authors or a monthly AI allowance.
What's an active book?
A book you're working on. Archive a finished book and it stops counting; you can still read and export it, and bring it back later.
Can I be charged more than the plan price for AI?
No. There are no overage charges. The allowance is a ceiling: a scan or question that doesn't fit what's left doesn't run and nothing is spent. A reading pack is charged only when you choose to buy one.
What is a “word of reading”?
One word of your manuscript read by the studio's AI tools, with the instructions that go with it. It's how we show the allowance and reading packs instead of cents or credits. The figures are approximate and deliberately cautious, because they assume each run uses the most it could; in practice the reading usually goes further.
How does billing work?
Plans are billed monthly or yearly, and reading packs once, through Gumroad, which handles payment and any sales tax or VAT. We never see your full card details. Cancel a plan at any time; it runs to the end of the period you've paid for.
Is there a yearly plan?
Yes. Core is $120 a year and Studio is $240 a year — two months free compared with paying monthly. Your AI allowance still arrives month by month, the same as on a monthly plan, so one busy month can't use up the year. There's no lifetime plan.
Are there other limits on AI use?
A few fair-use limits, which keep the service steady and protect everyone from runaway costs. Each day can use only part of your monthly allowance, so one long session can't empty the month; reading packs have a daily limit of their own instead. Each account runs one AI task at a time, there's a limit on how many start in an hour, and a single run has a maximum size — a very large one asks you to narrow the scope. If the service's own AI budget is ever used up, AI features pause for a while for everyone. Trials include AI reading once the email address is verified, and not for temporary email addresses. Whatever the reason, nothing is sent and nothing is spent when a run can't start, the studio tells you why, and writing, search and export keep working.
