Lore & Lilac vs World Anvil
World Anvil is built for building whole worlds, often to share them; Lore & Lilac is built for writing one novel or series and keeping its facts straight. There's real overlap in maps, timelines and family trees, so it's worth being clear about the difference.
About World Anvil
What World Anvil is good at
World Anvil is a worldbuilding platform organised around wiki-style articles. It offers interactive maps, timelines, family trees and tools for running tabletop RPG campaigns, and worlds can be made public and shared with its community. It also includes a manuscript writing tool. It suits worldbuilders, game masters and writers who want a deep, browsable encyclopaedia of their setting.
The short version
Which one fits you?
Choose World Anvil if…
- You run tabletop RPG campaigns as well as, or instead of, writing novels.
- You want to publish your world publicly and take part in a worldbuilding community.
- You think in encyclopaedia articles and want a wiki-style setting.
- Your world is bigger than any one story you're telling in it.
Choose Lore & Lilac if…
- Your focus is the manuscript: a full editor with scenes, version history and crash recovery.
- You want world details tied to the passage that established them, in a story bible with truth scopes for canon, rumour and belief.
- You want an optional continuity scan that cites both conflicting passages.
- You want to track who knows what and when the reader learns it, across a series.
- You'd like your worldbuilding kept private, shared only with beta readers by link.

Fair is fair
Where World Anvil is ahead
- Tabletop RPGs. World Anvil has campaign tools for game masters. We have none.
- Public worlds and community. You can share a world publicly and join a community around it. We don't host public worlds or a forum.
- Depth of the encyclopaedia. Its article-based approach suits sprawling settings better than our story bible, which is shaped around a novel.
- Maps. Interactive maps are a central part of World Anvil; ours sit inside the story bible.
- A free way in. World Anvil can be used without paying, and so can we, but our Free plan is one active book, and AI reading needs a reading pack or a plan.
You don't have to choose
Using both
Keep the sprawling world in World Anvil and the facts your novel actually uses here.
Keep World Anvil as your master encyclopaedia, especially if you also run games in the setting.
Write the novel in Lore & Lilac.
Add only what this book relies on to the story bible, and cite the passage where each detail appears.
Run the continuity scan on the manuscript, and update World Anvil when the book settles a question.

Questions about World Anvil
Can I import my World Anvil articles?
Not directly. We import manuscripts: Word, RTF, EPUB, Markdown, plain text or a zipped Scrivener project. Story-bible entries are added in the studio, or proposed with their source passages by an optional story scan for you to accept.
Is Lore & Lilac good for worldbuilding?
For worldbuilding in service of a novel or series, yes: places, groups, rules, maps, family trees and timelines in the story bible. For a public setting or game campaigns, World Anvil is the better fit. Our worldbuilding guide goes further.
Can I share my world publicly?
No. You can share the manuscript with beta readers through private links, but we don't publish worlds.
