Lore & Lilac vs Microsoft Word
Microsoft Word is the file format and the editing workflow most of publishing runs on. Lore & Lilac doesn't try to replace that; it's a studio for writing and revising a novel that hands a clean DOCX to Word when it's time. Here's how they compare.
About Microsoft Word
What Microsoft Word is good at
Microsoft Word is a word processor available as a desktop app and on the web. Agents, editors and publishers commonly exchange manuscripts as Word files, and its track changes feature is the usual way to show, accept and reject edits in publishing. Styles and the Navigation pane make long documents easier to move around, and comments sit in the margin. It's available through a Microsoft 365 subscription or a one-time Office purchase.
The short version
Which one fits you?
Choose Microsoft Word if…
- Your editor, agent or publisher works with tracked changes, which is common in publishing.
- You want a desktop app that works fully without a connection, from creating files to saving them anywhere you like.
- You already own Office or pay for Microsoft 365.
- You need detailed page layout and styles for documents beyond the novel.
- You prefer one long document and know your way around the Navigation pane.
Choose Lore & Lilac if…
- You want the book in chapters and scenes, with focus mode, crash recovery and version history you can compare word by word.
- You want a story bible tied to your text, where details cite the passage that established them.
- You want help spotting possible contradictions with a continuity scan that cites both passages.
- You'd like planning views, writing stats and a revision desk next to the manuscript.
- You want to share a private reading link instead of emailing files to beta readers.

Fair is fair
Where Microsoft Word is ahead
- Track changes. Word's tracked changes are what most editors and publishers expect. We have margin comments, not tracked changes, so a professional edit will usually happen in Word.
- Offline desktop app. Word's desktop app opens any document with no connection. Our studio opens offline only for books you've already opened on that device, and new scenes and exports wait for a connection.
- Layout and styles. Word gives you far more control over page layout and styles than our editor does.
- One-time purchase option. You can own Office outright. Our Core and Studio plans are monthly or yearly, and there's no lifetime option.
- Universal format. Everyone can open a Word file. Our studio is a place to write and revise, and you'll still send DOCX files out.
You don't have to choose

Export a DOCX, for example from a submission edition, and send it to your editor.
Your editor works in Word with track changes; you accept or reject them in Word.
To keep revising here, import the clean, accepted copy; the fidelity report shows what came through before anything is created.

Questions about Microsoft Word
Does Lore & Lilac support tracked changes?
No. We have margin comments, not tracked changes. For a tracked edit, export a DOCX, let your editor work in Word, and accept or reject the changes there before importing a clean copy if you want to keep revising here.
Will my Word formatting survive the import?
Headings, emphasis, links and scene breaks come across, and Word comments can be placed in the margin on the paragraphs they're about. Tracked changes are taken as shown, with deletions left out. A fidelity report lists anything that didn't come across before you commit, and your original file is never changed. If your chapters aren't styled as headings, lines like “Chapter 12” can be detected instead.
Can I export back to Word?
Yes. Export DOCX at any time, along with TXT, EPUB, a print-ready PDF through your browser's print dialog, or a complete project archive.
Does Lore & Lilac write text for me?
No. The studio never writes, suggests or rewrites prose. AI features are off for each book until you allow them; only the excerpts a check needs are sent to the provider named on screen (Anthropic), never for training, and you see an estimate before anything is spent. See how it works and privacy.
